Chapter Twenty-Two

My mom’s eyes narrow as she studies me. Then, she points at the base of my neck. “What’s that?”

“What?” My heart skips a beat. Shit. Did Devin leave a mark on my neck? I rush to the hallway mirror and tilt my head to get a better look. A red string pokes out of the collar of Devin’s jersey. Holy hell. Really? “It’s a string, Mom.”

“Hmmm.” She shrugs and sets Joselyn on the floor. “I thought it was something else.”

I cross my arms and glare at her. “Like what?”

“Oh.” She shrugs. “I don’t know. You asked me last second to watch Joselyn when I normally have to beg to watch her, and then, you don’t answer the phone when I call.”

Yeah. I shudder and unlace my arms. I wasn’t about to answer with a dick stuck in my mouth. I turn to keep from giggling. “How’s momma’s girl?”

“Good.” She grins and jumps into my arms. My heart fills with even more love as I hold her close to my chest.

When I found out I was pregnant, I couldn’t imagine anything good coming from it. Pregnant. In a controlling and abusive marriage. With no idea what to do. How was I going to survive being connected to Rafael for life? Fearing that he’d beat me, and I’d lose my baby. I squeeze my eyes shut and hold her tighter. “Love you, baby.”

“Love you.” She places her hands on my cheeks and smacks my lips with a wet kiss.

After I set her down, she runs over to her toys. Getting pregnant with Devin’s baby would be a different experience. One filled with love and excitement.

“Dear, don’t evade the question. What or whom exactly did you do last night?” My mom pats her kinky hair. “Devin, I’m guessing.”

I stand completely still like a mouse in the middle of a pasture as an eagle soars overhead. “Why do you say that?”

“Because you’re glowing, thought you had a hickey on your neck, and you’re wearing his jersey.”

I bust out laughing and walk into the kitchen. “Fine. I was with Devin last night, but don’t tell Gunner.”

“Why would Gunner care? He’s friends with Devin, and you’re an adult woman. Not to mention, you’ve been mooning over him for months.” She grabs a dishtowel and dries one of the plates Devin and I used to eat breakfast.

“I don’t think Gunner will care.” I put the clean skillet into the cabinet. “But Devin’s got some crazy hang-up that he’s not good enough for me, and Gunner’s going to be mad.”

“That’s ridiculous.” She tosses down the towel. “That boy is the sweetest man I know. He worships you and Joselyn. Your brother is an idiot if he’s never realized that.”

“Gunner’s preoccupied.”

“With that, Dani, girl?” My mom arches an eyebrow.

“Yeah, I think so. He seems to really like her.”

“What do you think?”

“I think she’s perfect for him. I hope he doesn’t fuck it up.”

“Yeah.” My mom rests her hip against the island.

My eyes shift to the ceiling. I can’t look at her as she stands where Devin and I had sex.
